7 Debunked Gynecological Myths You Shouldn’t Believe In

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about the female reproductive systems. Most of them are outdated or have no proven background. Unfortunately, such misconceptions can affect your health or make you misunderstand the functions and processes of your reproductive system. In this article, we have gathered seven debunked gynecological myths you shouldn’t believe in.

1. Pain during periods is normal

There is a common misconception that painful cramps during periods are normal and every woman has them. The reality is that unbearable pain and cramping can manifest a certain health issue.

For example, women with endometriosis can experience sharp pain during periods and many other unpleasant symptoms. If you have severe periods that interfere with your normal activity and affect your well-being, it is better to make an appointment with your gynecologist to evaluate your condition and undergo precise treatment.

2. Hormonal contraception causes infertility

Many women refuse hormonal contraception because they think that ur can lead to infertility. The point is that hormonal contraception can make periods lighter or even stop them. But the effect usually disappears when you stop taking contraceptives. Additionally, hormonal contraception can help treat certain health issues that may cause fertility issues.

3. Vaginal dryness affects only older women

Vaginal dryness is a condition in which a woman has a decreased lubrication. Even though this condition usually affects premenopausal and menopausal women, many young women can also experience a lack of lubrication.

The point is that vaginal dryness occurs when the estrogen levels decrease. This decrease can occur not only before and during menopause. If a woman has an estrogen-related hormonal imbalance, she can also have vaginal dryness.

4. Uterine fibroids can be cured at home

Indeed, there are many home remedies and medications that can help ease symptoms caused by uterine fibroids. But you should understand that these remedies can’t help you get rid of fibroids. If fibroids are large and cause complications, it is better to contact a fibroid clinic and remove them.

5. STIs always cause severe symptoms

Some people think that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) always cause severe symptoms that can be easily noticed. Unfortunately, some people can have no symptoms but be infected at the same time.

As a result, they can pass the infection to their partners through unprotected sex and even don’t know about this. That’s why it is essential to use condoms during sex and undergo regular STD testing.

6. Only women can have fertility issues

Many couples all over the world experience fertility issues. In some cases, a woman has certain conditions that can interfere with conception and carrying a child. But you should know that men can also be infertile. Therefore, both partners should be examined in the case of infertility.

7. Missed periods mean pregnancy

Indeed, missed periods are deemed one of the most common signs of pregnancy. But there are many other factors that can make you skip your periods. The most common of them are:

  • Stress
  • Sudden weight gain or loss
  • Excessive exercising
  • Thyroid disorder
  • PCOS
  • Hormonal imbalance

If you have missed a few periods in a row, contact your gynecologist. A doctor will perform an examination and additional tests to define the exact cause of missed periods. Timely and accurate treatment can help improve your condition and regulate your menstrual cycle.

The bottom line

It is important to understand that you are the only person who is responsible for your health and well-being. If you have noticed some strange symptoms, it is better to make an appointment with a gynecologist as soon as possible to prevent further complications.
